RIDER CHECK IN

Are you holding your horse back?

What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a science-based profession. Whether applied to humans or horses, the goal is the same: to develop, maintain, and restore movement and function.

  • For Horses: Remedial treatment requires delegation by a veterinary surgeon. We specialise in soft tissue, orthopaedic, and neurological conditions.

  • For Humans: As Chartered Physiotherapists, we use clinical reasoning to treat musculoskeletal issues that hinder your daily life and your riding.

We use subjective and objective assessment skills, including gait analysis and functional movement screening, to produce a treatment plan that serves both athletes in the partnership.

Rider Check-In: Are You Holding Your Horse Back?

We often blame the horse for being "stiff on the left" or "heavy in the right hand," but often, they are simply mirroring us. Ask yourself:

  • Do you struggle to keep your stirrups even? (Do you feel like one leg is always shorter?)

  • Does your instructor repeat the same corrections? ("Drop your right hip," "Left shoulder back," "Stop collapsing!")

  • Do you suffer from lower back pain or stiffness after riding?

  • Does your horse drift to one side approaching a fence or down the centre line?

If you answered "Yes" to any of these, the restriction might be yours.

At Equibetter, we assess and treat these asymmetry issues, helping you become a balanced, effective partner for your horse.

Testimonials

"My horse was having strange behaviours and I couldn’t quite figure out what it was so we decided to have a look through physio. Gemma was amazing, did a complete evaluation of my horse, from standstill posture to trotting and tight circles. She also checked for any tight spots on him to provide me with the best and most complete feedback about my horse and what could cause his behaviours. She was very patient with my youngster. Not only did she find something that might be causing discomfort, she gave him treatment and also provided me with a whole set of exercises to do to help my horse feel more comfortable. Couldn’t have asked for a better treatment for my horse and I He most definitely loved it! Thank you so much for looking after us "
